Decipher Ambiguous Category Labels
Use examples and neighboring categories to understand what a website means by its labels.
Do not assume a label has one meaning
Words such as premium, editorial, collection, and studio can describe different things across websites. A category label is a starting clue, not a complete definition. When a label is ambiguous, inspect the description around it and a few entries inside it. For example, one directory may use Studios to group organizations, while another might use a similar word for a visual style. You will navigate more confidently if you learn the local meaning before using the label as a firm selection rule or comparison criterion.
Compare the neighbors
Look at adjacent categories and ask what distinction the site appears to be making. If Photography sits beside Networks and Live, the categories may mix content format and destination type. That does not necessarily make the directory unusable, but it means some entries could reasonably overlap. Avoid expecting a perfectly exclusive classification unless the site explains one. Write the distinction in ordinary language, such as 'This menu separates photography-focused destinations from broad multi-category networks.' A short paraphrase can make an unfamiliar structure easier to remember.
Use a small sample to test your interpretation
Open three entries from the category and check whether they support your tentative definition. If two fit and one differs, investigate the exception instead of immediately rewriting the whole definition. It may reveal that the category is broad, that an entry covers several roles, or that the label is being used loosely. Keep your conclusion proportional to the sample. You are learning how to browse the current collection, not conducting a complete audit of every item or establishing an authoritative definition for the industry.
Keep a personal translation
When a category repeatedly matters to you, save a short explanation in the words you naturally use. 'Editorial means company overview here, not a dated news item' is a useful personal translation. Update it if later examples contradict it. The takeaway is to interpret labels through descriptions, neighboring groups, and representative entries. Once you understand what a site means, its navigation becomes more predictable, and you can compare destinations without accidentally treating two differently defined categories as if they were the same thing.
