Skim Article Headings With a Purpose
Use an article's structure to choose where to read closely without mistaking a skim for full understanding.
Bring one question to the scan
Skimming works best when you know what you are looking for. Before scanning an article's headings, write the question you want answered. 'How should I name a comparison folder?' is specific enough to guide attention. Then read the title, introduction, and section headings as a map. W3C guidance recommends headings and spacing to group related content. For a reader, that structure can help identify where an explanation is likely to live, but it does not replace reading the actual passage that supports the answer.
Predict the article's route
Notice whether the headings move from a problem to an explanation, an example, and a next action. You are not grading the author against one mandatory format. You are building a quick picture of the journey. For example, headings about category labels, sample entries, and comparison notes suggest a practical browsing method. A series of company names suggests a list of examples instead. This prediction helps you choose the right section and recognize when the article's form does not match the kind of answer you need.
Read closely where the answer depends on detail
Once you locate a promising section, slow down. Read the example, any conditions, and the transition to the next paragraph. A heading such as 'Keep It Simple' may conceal the most important distinction in the article. Do not save a conclusion based only on the heading's wording. If you find a useful instruction, restate it with enough context to apply it later. 'Use a few task-based folders for active comparisons' is more practical than the generic note 'Be organized.'
Label the depth of your reading
In your notes, distinguish scanned, partly read, and fully read material when that distinction matters. A scan can establish relevance; it cannot support a detailed verdict on every argument in the piece. If the article is promising but not urgent, place it in a small reading queue with the section you intend to revisit. The takeaway is to scan with a question, use headings as a map, and slow down at the point where examples and conditions determine what the advice actually means.
