Let Someone Help Without Handing Over the Account
A trusted friend can explain a confusing account task without collecting your passwords, recovery codes or an open-ended role.
Describe the help you want in one sentence
A trusted friend may understand account settings better than you do, but help can take many forms. You might need an explanation of an error message, someone to read instructions aloud or a second look at a confusing label. Say which task you want help with before opening the account. For example, asking someone to explain a recovery option is different from asking them to manage every future login. A small, explicit request makes it easier for both people to stay within the intended role.
Keep the secret entry with the account owner
Google's backup-code guidance says not to share those codes. A helpful person does not need a copy merely because they are sitting beside you. They can explain which stage you have reached and turn away while you enter a credential yourself. The same courtesy applies when you are the helper. Do not ask someone to paste secrets into a conversation so you can work faster. Assistance should improve the owner's understanding without creating a second, casually stored collection of their access information.
Review a confusing choice before making it
If an option changes who can access the account, pause long enough for the owner to understand its stated effect. Avoid clicking through unfamiliar prompts on the assumption that a technically confident helper must know best. You can consult the provider's official explanation together using a nonsecret description of the problem. If neither person understands the consequence, leave the choice unchanged and use established support. Trust between friends does not remove the need to understand a control before changing it.
Leave the owner able to continue alone
End with the owner describing what changed and what remains to be done. A short note can name the completed setting without containing its secret value. Do not leave a friend's email address or device as an improvised recovery method simply because it made today's task convenient. If ongoing assistance is genuinely needed, consider only arrangements the provider explicitly supports and understand their scope separately. The best outcome is a resolved question and clearer ownership, not permanent dependence on whoever happened to help first.
