Practical guide
A Lost Device Needs an Account Access Review Too
Finding a missing phone and securing its account sessions are related but separate jobs. Start with access you can actually verify.
Describe what is missing without guessing who has it
A phone left in a vehicle, a laptop misplaced during travel and a device passed to someone else create different practical situations. Start with what you know: which device is missing, when you last controlled it and which important accounts you used there. You do not need to prove that another person opened an account before reviewing access. Avoid declaring that everything was stolen or that everything is safe. The immediate task is limiting uncertainty around the account relationships involved.
Use another device you already trust
Open account controls from a device you can use privately. If your usual sign-in method depends on the missing device, follow the provider's established recovery process rather than a stranger's proposed shortcut. Consider an adult traveler who asks a friend for help: the friend can offer a quiet place and a charger without being given passwords or recovery codes. Assistance should make the official process easier to use, not replace the account owner or expand the number of people holding secrets.
Review the missing device's account sessions
Google provides controls for reviewing devices and signing out of sessions on a lost device. Other providers have their own controls and terminology. Read the account's current instructions and identify the relevant entries as carefully as possible. A device name alone may be ambiguous, so compare available context without inventing certainty. Record the result shown after the action. This is an account-access step; it should not be described as proof that the physical device has been located or its contents erased.
Keep separate jobs separate
Your follow-up list may contain locating hardware, restoring your own access and checking specific account changes. Keep those outcomes distinct. Signing out of one account does not establish what happened in every other account used on that device. Work through the important relationships you actually identified and seek provider help where controls are unavailable. A useful closing note says which access was reviewed and what remains unresolved, giving you a manageable next step instead of an unsupported promise that the incident is over.
