Pause When a Preview Suddenly Requires an Extension

A promised page view should not quietly expand into software installation and broad browser access.

Compare the promise with the new requirement

A page promises a simple preview, but the next screen says you must install a special viewer. That requirement changes the decision you were making. You wanted to view information, not necessarily add software to your browser. Ask whether the service clearly documented the requirement before you arrived and whether an ordinary viewing option exists. You can leave an unavailable preview without needing to prove that the proposed extension is malicious. A missing piece of content is not an emergency.

Read access before accepting the workaround

If you are considering the extension, review its source and permissions independently of the page's promise. Mozilla explains that extension permissions can include access to website data, entered information, or other browser capabilities. Those powers deserve a separate decision from whether you like the preview's subject. Imagine granting broad access to future account pages merely to solve a one-time viewing problem. The amount of information potentially involved can be much larger than the small task that first brought you there.

Do not accept personal delivery as verification

A message from someone calling themselves a moderator may offer an alternate extension file when the normal route does not work. That is another change in source, not a completed authenticity check. Return to the service's known help pages and ask whether the extension is genuinely required. Avoid allowing a private conversation to become a guided installation session. If the explanation depends on ignoring warnings or using an unofficial file, stop rather than treating persistence as evidence that the helper knows what they are doing.

Choose the boundary that fits your actual need

You may decide that a documented, understood extension is appropriate for a service you deliberately use. You may also decide that one preview is not worth the access requested. Both decisions should be made after separating the software question from the content question. Keep the outcome explicit: either you knowingly add a tool for a defined purpose, or you leave the preview unopened. Do not let curiosity make installation feel like an unavoidable final click in a task you already started.
