Unlinking an Account Is Not the Same as Deleting It

Keep sign-in links, app permissions, and stored account data separate when you stop using a connection.

Name the relationship you are ending

An account can have several relationships with another service: a way to sign in, permission to access information, or a separate account holding its own records. Before removing a connection, identify which relationship the control describes. A button labeled Disconnect does not explain every possible consequence by itself. In a hypothetical setup, you used a main identity account to sign in to a community, then decide to remove that convenience. The community account and its stored information are separate questions that still need an answer.

Read the provider's stated effect

Google's linked-app guidance explicitly says that removing a Sign in with Google link does not delete data held by the other app. That is a useful example of why control labels must be read carefully. Use the official documentation for the exact connection you have, because other services and link types may behave differently. Do not infer a broad privacy outcome from a narrow confirmation. A successful disconnection proves that the documented link changed, not that every associated account record disappeared.

Avoid locking yourself out of your own review

Before changing a sign-in relationship, understand how you will access any account information you still need to inspect. Do not remove several recovery and login paths at once while trying to understand their effects. Work through one documented change and confirm the result. If you no longer want the separate account, use that provider's official closure or data-handling information rather than assuming a removed connection completes the process. This is an account-control check, not a promise about any service's retention policy.

Record the outcome in plain language

Write a short nonsecret note describing what happened: sign-in link removed, access permission revoked, or account closure confirmed through the provider's process. Keep unresolved questions separate. For example, you may know that future access was removed while still waiting for an explanation of stored data. That honest distinction prevents a privacy task from being called complete too early. The practical takeaway is to match your conclusion to the action actually confirmed, rather than treating every form of disconnection as a universal delete button.
